Imagine a place where everyone knows everybody else. A place that has a resilient, authority challenging, underdog, can-do, go get ‘em determination. A place where forces outside of its control have forced ingenuity, bootstrapping scrappiness, and a belief in bottom-up decision making. When the conditions are just right, they can cause a cultural spark that have the ability to revolutionize industries.
In the 70s, Utah became the unlikely melting pot that sparked digital animation. Silicon Valley is to computer technology what Paris was to the impressionist movement — a place that sparked a movement.
Today those conditions exist in Israel. The country has created the conditions over the last decade to produce a disproportionate amount of start-ups and patents relative to its size. The graphic arts industry has been witness to these effects. There was already Scitex and Indigo and now there is Scodix and Landa. Several other companies have also located R&D offices in the country.
Is there a repeatable formula to reproduce these phenomenon? Probably not, but there are ways to think and grow like a start-up which provide the initial spark for most innovations.
Points to help your business think and grow like a start-up…
• Debate, do, then always keep iterating and honing but know when to pivot.
• Find a target or purpose to act as a rallying point. Apple had Microsoft. Toyota had GM. Susan G. Komen has breast cancer.
• Empower all levels to make decisions. “Get the right people on the bus”, as Jim Collins says and then give them the freedom and authority to lead and decide.
• Look for others companies that could help form your own innovation cluster.
(Start-ups by nature cause disruption. So it should come as no surprise that most are not being launched by entrepreneurs from outside the industry.)
